Afilias is a consortium of eighteen of the world's leading domain name registrars with operations spanning North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The group was awarded the right to operate the .info registry in November of 2000 following its application to The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) during the open application process last year. After Afilias has completed contract negotiations with ICANN, and subsequent review and approval by the ICANN board and the U.S. Department of Commerce, .info will become the first new unrestricted generic top-level domain (TLD) since .com.
